It’s that time of the year when we get to announce the 2019-2020 AWEA Scholarship Program. And if this year is anything like last year, the committee will really have their work cut out. Last year’s applications were filled from both undergraduates and members seeking financial aid to further their educational goals. For the second year in a row, we were able to award scholarships in both categories. We know there are even more members out there taking classes so please don’t forget to apply this year. The format will be similar to last year for the AWEA Member Education Scholarship and the AWEA Undergraduate Education Scholarship.
The AWEA Member Education Scholarship is a one-time $1,500.00 award. It is open to any active member in good standing, which also includes Utility Partnership members. The applicant must be attending an Alabama institute for higher learning in the fall of 2019 and can be a full time or part time student. Proof of registration and GPA must be submitted. An unofficial copy will be acceptable. Also, a one page essay on the applicant’s education and career goals is to be submitted. A point system will be used to award the scholarship.
The AWEA Undergrad Education Scholarship is a one-time $1,500.00 award. The student does not have to be a dependent of an active member, but preference will be given to a member’s child. The student can be studying any field of study, but preference will also be given to those studying the environment and engineering fields. Proof of registration and GPA must be submitted. An unofficial copy will be acceptable. Also, a one page essay on the applicant’s education and career goals will need to be submitted. A point system will be used to award the scholarship. This year the winner will also receive a 1-Year AWEA Student Membership. We will also award a 1-Year AWEA Student Membership to the 2nd and 3rd place winners.
The deadline for both scholarships is Friday June 7, 2019. Winners will be announced by the end of July 2019. The scholarship monies will be distributed in the fall of 2019 to assure attendance. Applicants are required to sign the application stating that the information is true and complete, and the funds will be used as stated. Also, any funds not used for the stated purpose will be returned to AWEA. The point system is based on GPA, Education/Career Goals, Extra-Curricular Activities/Honors, and Discipline of Study. The undergrad scholarship will also have a point system for being a dependent of an active AWEA member.
The applications are located on the web site, www.awea-al.com. You can also contact me ([email protected]) or Kim Polifka ([email protected]) if you have any questions or need an application. If you are going back to school or have a child that will be attending college in the fall of 2019, please consider applying.
In keeping with the fundamental ideas set forth by AWEA to give back to its members, the AWEA Scholarship Committee is very excited to continue this program. However, we could not continue without the financial support given by the Golf Tournament Sponsors and the 5S Society. A big thank you to them! The committee is always looking for ways to increase the scholarship opportunities. Please consider donating or even setting up an endowment to help our members attain their educational goals.
