It is with great pleasure that AWEA announces the opening of the 2018-2019 AWEA Scholarship Program. Last year was very active as we were able to award winners to both categories for the first time. We had 11 undergrad applicants and quite a few member applicants. We know there are even more members out there taking classes, so don’t forget to apply this year. The format will be the same as last year for the AWEA Member Education and the AWEA Undergraduate Education scholarships.
The AWEA Member Education Scholarship is a one-time $1,500.00 award. It is open to any active member in good standing, which also includes Utility Partnership members. The applicant must be attending an Alabama institute for higher learning and can be full time or part time student. Proof of registration and GPA must be submitted (an unofficial copy will be acceptable). Also, a one page essay on the applicant’s education and career goals is to be submitted. A point system will be used to award the scholarship.
The AWEA Undergraduate Education Scholarship is a one-time $1,500.00 award. The student does not have to be a minor of an active member, but preference will be given to a member’s child. The student can be studying any field of study, but preference will be given to those studying in the environmental and engineering fields. Proof of registration and GPA must be submitted (an unofficial copy will be acceptable). Also, a one page essay on the applicant’s education and career goals will need to be submitted. A point system will be used to award the scholarship.
The deadline to apply for either scholarship is June 1, 2018. Scholarships will be awarded by the end of July 2018. The undergrad scholarship will be distributed in the Fall of 2018 to assure attendance. Applicants are required to sign the application stating that the information is true and complete and the funds will be used as stated. Also, any funds not used for the stated purpose must be returned to AWEA. The point system is based on GPA, education/career goals, extra-curricular activities/honors, and discipline of study. The undergrad scholarship will also include a point system for being a minor of an active AWEA member.
In keeping with the fundamental ideas set forth by AWEA to give back to its members, the AWEA Scholarship Committee is very excited to continue this program. However, we could not continue without the financial support given by the AWEA annual Golf Tournament Sponsors and the contributions made to the 5S Society. The Sponsorship Committee is always looking for new ways to increase the scholarship opportunities. Please consider donating or even setting up an endowment to help our members attain their educational goals.
