The Water
Environment Federation promotes special recognition through its Member
Associations in the establishment of awards and recognition for special
service to the Member Association and the Federation. Alabama's Water
Environment Association presents these awards at it's annual meeting.
In preparation for awards to be presented at the 2009 Annual Conference,
the Association's nominating committee will receive nominations for
these awards until January 31, 2009. Please review the criteria provided
below and the nomination form to make nominations of individuals
you feel have provided extraordinary service to our Association.

AWEA
PLANT EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Over the
last two years, AWEA expanded its Plant Excellence Awards Program
to include both Industrial Wastewater Facilities and Domestic (Publicly-owned
or Privately-owned) Wastewater Facilities. The AWEA Plant Awards
Committee will administer the Plant Excellence Awards Program and
recognize winners at the Annual AWEA Conference. A quick recap of
eligibility follows:
1. Domestic
Facilities will be classified by design flow (exclusive of plant/process
complexity). Industrial facilities will be classified according to
process complexity. Domestic and Industrial Facilities will be classified
according to the following categories:

AWEA Plant Excellence Award application must be complete and received
by the Awards Committee by January 16, 2009, of the year of the Annual
AWEA Conference for consideration
6.
Review period for Applicant Plants will be the past calendar year (January-December,
2009)
7.
Winners of Plant Excellence Awards can not win two consecutive years,
but can receive recognition for continued excellence
8. Winners
of Plant Excellence Awards must agree to a presentation at the next
scheduled Annual AWEA Conference AND preparation of an article in The
Wave (assistance from AWEA will be provided for both)

GOLDEN
MANHOLE AWARD
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. All
nomination forms must be submitted in triplicate (3 copies), including
all attachments.
2. Nominators must use the attached form, other formats will not
be accepted.
3. Submitted materials will not be returned to sender.
REQUIREMENTS:
Significant participation in one or more of the following
areas: Operations, Maintenance, Design, Education, Training, Certification,
Management and Planning of Sewer Collection Systems.
EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Induction will be decided by a minimum of three
members of the AWEA Collections Committee. The committee will use the
following criteria to select a nominee for the award.
1. Years of experience and significant
participation in the one or more of the areas listed in the above
section titled REQUIREMENTS;
2. Involvement in promoting the professional recognition of the collection
system field;
3. Participation in the Alabama Water Environment Association collection
system committee;
4. Papers or articles accepted by state, regional or national publications.
Technical presentations at professional conferences;
5. Membership in WEF National Collection Systems Committee.
OTHER:
The selection committee recognizes and honors separately,
both the inductees and their employers for their combined contributions
which promote increased professionalism in the collection systems field.

GOLDEN MANHOLE AWARD NOMINATION FORM
BEDELL AWARD
The
Bedell Award was established to acknowledge extraordinary personal
service to a WEF Member Association. The award is named for Arthur
Sidney Bedell, WEF's second president for his long devotion and service
to the New York Sewage and Industrial Wastes Association, now the
New York Water Environment Association. He was Chief of the Bureau
of Sewage and Waste Disposal of the New York State Department of
Health. The award is presented by a WEF representative at the WEF
Member Association Annual Meeting.
Criteria:
i. Member of the Water Environment Federation.
ii. Organizational leadership, administrative service, membership activity, stimulation
of technical functions, or similar participation.
iii. The size of the membership dictates the frequency with which Member Associations
are eligible to make nominations for the award.
BURKE
AWARD
This
award recognizes active and effective safety programs in municipal
and industrial wastewater facilities. This award was established
in 1982 in honor of George W. Burke, Jr., for his many years of
service to both the water environment field and WEF as staff manager
of technical services. Mr. Burke was instrumental in developing
WEF's annual safety survey and assisting in the production of several
safety training aids and promotional packets.
The purpose of this award is to encourage an active and effective
safety program in municipal and industrial wastewater facilities.
The award is presented by a WEF representative at the WEF Member
Association Annual Meeting.
Criteria:
i. The documented and illustrated safety program and safety record of the facility
for the preceding calendar year are the primary criteria for the award.
ii. Additionally, each WEF Member Association is allowed full freedom to establish
its own criteria.
iii. The size of the membership dictates the frequency with which Member Associations
are eligible to make nominations for the award.
DELEGATE
SERVICE
AWARD
In
recognition of the outstanding work by Member Association Delegates
in the House of Delegates, the Federation provides a Service Award
plaque for each retiring Delegate. The Service Award is presented
to the Delegate by a representative of the Federation at the Member
Association Annual Meeting after the WEFTEC of his or her retirement.
HATFIELD AWARD
The
Hatfield Award is presented to operators of wastewater treatment
plants for outstanding performance and professionalism. The award
was established in honor of Dr. William D. Hatfield, Superintendent
of the Decatur, Illinois Sanitary District, who was President of
the Central States Sewage Works Association in 1944-45 and served
as President of the Federation in 1958-59.
The award consists of a plaque suitably inscribed with the recipient's
name and is presented by a Federation representative at the Member
Association annual meeting.
Criteria:
WEF Member Associations select their recipient for the Hatfield Award
following the WEF general criteria indicated below:
i. Member of the Water Environment Federation.
ii. Documentation of a successful system of reports from the operator
to his or her superiors that fulfill the information requirements and
provide the operator with a forum for suggestions for improvements.
iii. Use of a good public relations program.
iv. The nominee should have contributed to the dissemination of information
concerning advancements in the field.
v. The size of the membership dictates the frequency with which Member
Associations are eligible to make nominations for the award.
LABORATORY
ANALYST AWARD
The
Laboratory Analyst Award recognizes individuals for outstanding
performance, professionalism and contributions to the water quality
analysis profession. The award is presented by a WEF representative
at the WEF Member Association annual meeting.
Criteria:
i. Member of the Water Environment Federation.
ii. Candidate must be employed at an educational facility laboratory, industrial,
commercial, or municipal laboratory which performs wastewater-related analyses,
and must have direct analytical responsibilities.
iii. Candidates are eligible for this award only once.
iv. Qualifying criteria may include:
a. Membership and involvement in professional associations. Examples: Water Environment
Federation Committees, Standard Methods Joint Task Groups, MA committees and
conferences and conference activities.
b. Outstanding efforts in the area of wastewater and environmental
aquatic analyses, including such items as innovative sampling techniques
or solutions to a treatment, analytical or environmental problem.
c. Involvement in community activities or public relations.
d. Presentations at professional conferences, meetings, etc. relevant to water
quality analyses.
e. Professional certifications.
f. Continuing education.
g. Contributions that have been beneficial to the nominee’s facility.
h. Unusual initiative or performance "beyond the call of duty".
MA
SERVICE
AWARD
Member
Associations may order Service Awards to recognize outstanding
service by members. Many Member Associations have ordered plaques
for their outstanding Presidents/ Secretaries/ Treasurers, etc.
INNOVATIVE
TECHNOLOGY AWARD
Recognizes
WEF Associate Members who have introduced new innovative products
or services related to the construction, operation or maintenance
of treatment facilities.
Categories:
- Instrumentation
- scientific instruments used either in the laboratory or for control
of the different treatment process.
- Process
Equipment - equipment used in the treatment plant to remove impurities
from wastewater.
- Collection
Systems - sewers and pumping stations used to convey wastewater from
its source to the treatment plant.
- Solids
Handling/Disposal - process of removing a part of the water in the
accumulated solids from the wastewater treatment plant and the disposal
of the resulting biosolids.
Criteria:
The products or services must demonstrate an innovative aspect utilizing
new ideas, methods, alterations and/or unique changes from existing
systems.
The products or services must have been in full scale operation
at a wastewater treatment facility or in a collections system for
a minimum of one year.
The products or services are eligible for a five-year period immediately
after documented results from a full scale installation become a
matter of public record. Two re-nominations may be made.
The products or services must demonstrate a significant achievement
in design, operation, maintenance or process change resulting in
demonstrated long-term water quality improvement. The application
should give significant detail as to the nature of the engineering
or scientific advances leading to the improvement.

Documentation stating specific reasons for nomination - Supporting
documentation required under criteria, i.e. detailed summary data
showing significant reduction in classic macro pollutants, BOD, N,
TS discharged to the effluent or in the sludge.
Detailed summary data showing significant reduction in micro pollutants,
chlorinated hydrocarbons, pesticides, metals, or hazardous compounds
by the products or services; Method of wastewater treatment or sludge
handling/disposal that maintains efficiency and results in lower
capital, operating or maintenance costs as a result of using the
products or services.
