FACING THE CHALLENGES OF ASSET MANAGEMENT: A CASE STUDY OF THE CITY OF TUSCALOOSA
Russ Barton

The City of Tuscaloosa has enjoyed some of the benefits of GIS and asset management for its wastewater collection system for almost five years. Now the City is extending its vision to include other areas such as water distribution, storm water, and streets. The lessons learned with the collection system work are helping the City plan for extending asset management throughout the enterprise.

Asset management is ubiquitous in our industry’s literature, but many utilities have yet to achieve satisfactory results regarding asset management. This presentation provides helpful information to those who have not started their asset management programs, those who want to revamp their asset management program, and those who want to extend their asset management program.

There are some key elements that must be present for an asset management initiative to succeed. We’ll discuss keys to success, how to assess your organization’s asset management potential, and how to promote an asset management culture within your organization. The information will be presented as a case study based on Tuscaloosa’s past and current experiences.
