STATUS OF USING FUEL CELLS AND MICROTURBINES IN MUNICIPAL ANAEROBIC DIGESTION FACILITIES
Nick Mignone

The first documented use of municipal anaerobic digester gas (ADG) to fuel an engine was in 1926. For the past eight decades numerous internal combustion engines to drive equipment or produce electricity using municipal ADG have been installed.

In 1997 a fuel cell to produce electrical energy from municipal ADG was installed. Since 1997 approximately one dozen municipal facilities in the United States using ADG have been built.

In 2000 a microturbine to produce electrical energy from municipal ADG was installed. Since 2000 approximately two dozen municipal facilities in the United States using ADG have been built.

This presentation will summarize start-up problems and operating and maintenance issues that have been encountered. Some limited capital cost information will be provided.
