Between
1990 and 2000, Lee County,
which includes the City of Auburn, was one of the fastest growing
counties in Alabama with a population growth rate of approximately
32 percent. The City of Auburn grew approximately 15 percent,
with an additional 6,600 people moving into the area between
2000 and 2005. Not only does the City have to manage development
to ensure that ample water and wastewater services are available,
but it also must protect local water resources through its Stormwater
Management Program. This presentation highlights the City’s
Stormwater Management Program, focusing on post-construction
watershed management strategies being utilized by the City to
protect and restore its water resources.
The
City of Auburn Water Resource Management Department recently
tasked its engineering consultant with creating a City of Auburn
Site Development Review Tool. This Tool can be used by engineers
and developers to design and incorporate structural stormwater
water quality BMPs for developments within Auburn’s planning
jurisdiction boundaries and to maximize the efficiency of runoff
pollutant management
following construction of developments. The Tool provides pollutant
removal estimates for site specific conditions based on removal
efficiencies for a variety of stormwater BMPs such as detention
ponds, bioretention areas, and stormwater wetlands. The Tool
analyzes a number of pollutants including nutrients and total
suspended solids.
During
this presentation, the City’s Water Quality Sampling
Program will also be highlighted.
