MORE THAN JUST MAPPING: CONCURRENT SEWER ASSESSMENTS AND GIS DEVELOPMENT
Scott Todd, P.E.

Many utilities are struggling with the reality that they do not have adequate data concerning the location and condition of their sewer infrastructure. Civil Systems, Inc. is leveraging GIS technology with field inspections to address both challenges:

  1. As-built drawings and other reference documents are scanned to be linked to GIS features.
  2. Field crews GPS survey and assess the condition of manholes, lift stations, air relief values, etc.
  3. GIS technicians use reference documents and field notes to develop pipeline connectivity and populate feature attributes.
  4. Engineers assimilate assessments data into databases to evaluate the condition of system components and plan future investigations.
  5. Field crews use CCTV technology and smoke testing to further investigate potential problem areas.
