SAVING MONEY (AND THE ENVIRONMENT) WITH A BAR OF SOAP AND A TRUCK THAT SMELLS LIKE FRENCH FRIES
Rob McElroy

Introduction
Daphne Utilities, located in Daphne, Alabama next to Mobile Bay, is a water, sewer and natural gas utility services provider. It serves the Daphne area and surrounding community, population of approximately 18,000 people and approximately 10,000 customers. The Utility has a service fleet of approximately 65 vehicles including trucks and heavy equipment of which about 15% are diesel powered.

The Utility faces many of the same problems and challenges that municipal utility provider's encounter which impact their services and ability to maintain their systems. These problems include oil and grease in sewer lines, rising energy costs, fuel availability after natural disasters, biosolids production and disposal, and keeping utility rates affordable.

Goal of the Presentation
The goal of the presentation is to educate other utility providers on how multi-pronged "Green" initiatives can:

  1. have a measurable positive affect on their operation's bottom line
  2. provide a highly effective marketing message to the utility's customers
  3. couple with similar initiatives around their community and state to further a comprehensive energy policy tailor-made specifically for the individual community

Conclusion
In effort to reduce grease blockages in sewer lines, Daphne Utilities has begun a series of innovative programs which have numerous "trickle down" benefits not only to the Utility, but to the community as a whole. Daphne Utilities seeks to share their "recipe" for success with other communities wishing to begin their own "Green" initiatives so that they too might benefit from these efforts.
