MULTI STAGE ACTIVATED BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES (MSABP) ELIMINATES EXCESS SLUDGE
David D. Lauer, P.E. & Dr. Efim Monosov

The MSABP™ (Multi-Stage Activated Biological Process) is an innovative and advanced proprietary process for treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater based on spatial microorganism succession and trophic hydrobionts chains. A spatially segregated trophic microorganism chain provides for conditions in which microbes are consumed by primary microorganisms while the later are consumed by higher organized vulture filtrators of different trophic levels. This MSABP™ trophic-chain design leads to a total consumption of excess sludge, with no need for sludge handling. The MSABP™ has been successfully implemented in numerous municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants worldwide.

Introduction
Waste or excess sludge generation as the result of the activated sludge treatment process amounts to approximately 6.9 million tons of biosolids per year. This value is expected to increase to 8.2 million tons by 2010. (U.S. EPA, 1999). A variety of sludge minimization technologies have been introduced to the wastewater treatment market over the past decade illustrating the interest and benefit to the industry. The multi stage activated biological process is an advanced innovative method of domestic and industrial wastewater treatment based on spatial microorganism successions and hydrobionts chains. A spatially segregated trophic microorganism chain provides for conditions in which microbes are consumed by primary microorganisms while the later are consumed by higher organized vulture filtrators of different trophic levels. Such a spatial microorganism succession provides treatment by means of aerobic and anaerobic destructor microorganisms together with conventional copiotrophs and oligotrophs providing for a high degree of treatment of wastewater from organic and inorganic impurities.

Conclusions
The Multi Stage Activated Biological Process offers a significant advancement in the activated sludge process and eliminates a costly flow stream for municipal extended aeration processes and industrial pretreatment systems. MSABP can cost effectively be applied to new construction and many retrofit applications.
